The fisheries ministers from the Faroe Islands, Greenland, Iceland and Norway and reoresentatives from the European Commission and the Russian Federation met in Tórshavn to discuss the management of blue whiting.
The parties discussed the possibility of reducing the fishery in 2005 in the event that ICES confirms the results of the recent joint survey indicating a substantial reduction in the biomass.
It was stressed thet if there is to be a reduction of foreseen catches in 2005 all parties would need to contribute.
The parties agreed to inform each other as soon as possible and not later than the end of June whether measures to reduce their fishing will be taken.
It was also agreed that the parties will start duscussions with the purpose of reaching a longer term agreement on the management of blue whiting and an interim allocation for 2006. A meeting will be held in Brussels in June.
It was further suggested to establish a special working group under NEAFC with the purpose of developing a model for the longer term allocation criteria.
