Ávarp á viðburði UNDP um Climate Promise á COP26

Let me start by congratulating UNDP on the success of the Climate Promise and express how excited we are about joining the second phase of this ambitious initiative.

Iceland is fully committed to the Paris Agreement. Concrete action is needed to achieve its goals – delaying it is not an option.

Iceland is committed to achieving carbon neutrality no later than 2040 and to reduce our net emissions, jointly with the EU and Norway, by at least 55% by 2030.

Iceland has also long championed the green energy transition – both as fundamental to addressing climate change, and for driving the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.

All of Iceland´s electricity is renewable and carbon free, and 85% of our total energy budget is from green energy. With the ongoing energy transition in transport, Iceland aims to increase the share of renewable energy in land transport to 40% by 2030 and to be fossil fuel free by 2050.

Iceland is also fully committed to support global climate action and to increasing our contribution to climate-related development cooperation.

Joining the Climate Promise is a key element of this commitment, and we look forward to working with UNDP and other partners to help drive NDC implementation around the world.
