The cooperation with the Icelanders on the use of geothermal energy in the state of Ladakh is important in the government's efforts to achieve carbon balance in Ladakh by 2050, said the state governor of Ladakh state at a meeting with Ambassador Guðni Bragason and Benedikt Höskuldson, special representative for climate affairs on October 13, 2022. The state governor, R. K. Mathur said he visited the geothermal area in Puga Valley, where ÍSOR and VERKÍS have collaborated with ONGC, the largest energy company in India. India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed great intentions to achieve carbon neutrality in the state, and geothermal energy plays a role in that. At the meeting with the county governor, they discussed the various possibilities of using geothermal energy to improve the economy and conditions of the county's residents. The state is in the north-western part of the country on the border with China and belongs to the Himalayan region. Its administration is different from that of other states in India, but it is under the separate control of the federal government, which appoints a state governor.
