Ávarp félags- og vinnumarkaðsráðherra á norrænni ráðstefnu um samþætta heimaþjónustu

Guðmundur Ingi Guðbrandsson, félags- og vinnumarkaðsráðherra:

Nordic workshop on integrated health and social care in home service

I am honored to stand before you as we conclude this significant workshop on the integration of social and health care in home services. Today, we have delved into different aspect of integrated home service from four countries.

Earlier, Ólafur Þór Gunnarsson introduced you to the government action plan "Good to Grow Older," a transformative initiative led by the Minister of Social Affairs  and Labor and the Minister of Health in collaboration with the Association of Icelandic Municipalities and the National Association of Senior Citizens.

The demographic landscape of Iceland is rapidly changing, with the percentage of older people projected to rise from 13% in 2023 to 20% in 2050. This is not unique to Iceland, although the timing can differ. The core of the plan, emphasizes the development projects aimed at integrating social and healthcare services for older individuals. And in that work, it is crucial for us to draw insights from countries where the aging population has already reached significant levels.

Moreover, our focus should extend beyond the sheer increase in numbers, considering how the well-being and activity levels of older individuals have improved over the years. "Good to Grow Older" embodies a new approach, highlighting that older people are not a burden but invaluable contributors to society.

The action plan outlines a vision for a healthier and more active older population through comprehensive health promotion, flexible services, and enhanced access to information. The ultimate goal is to enable as many individuals as possible to continue participating actively in our society. And the project aims to explore new ways for older individuals to remain active, improve public health, and live at home for as long as possible.

What I believe is the key for success is that we have managed to excercise a careful and deep collaborative approach. The active co-operation of the two ministries, the Association of Icelandic Municipalities, and the National Association of Senior Citizens, marks a crucial step towards a more integrated and supportive system.

As we move forward, let´s remember that our actions are guided by the principles of promoting healthy aging, preventing hospital admissions, and increasing the participation of older individuals in society. The approval of the parliamentary resolution on the action plan for the years 2023-2027 ( by Alþingi on May 10, 2023), signifies a collective commitment to the well-being of our older citizens.

As 22 municipalities and 6 healthcare institutions embark on development projects to integrate home services in the beginning of 2024 , I want to express my gratitude to all the speakers who joined us despite the looming threat of volcanic eruptions. I also want to extend my best wishes to those of you here representing the areas in Iceland where integration projects will unfold. May success accompany your endeavors.

I have met quite a few representatives from municipalities that are part taking in Good to Grow Older in recent weeks, and I must say that it´s not often that you meet such overall excitement and encouragement from people. And that I have to thank my dear colleauges who keep their eyes on the ball 24/7.

In conclusion, the "Good to Grow Older" initiative is not merely a plan; it is a testament to our shared commitment to creating a future where it is truly good to grow older in Iceland.

Thank you for your dedication, Thank you all for your collaboration, and participation in this crucial endeavor.

Together, let us build societies that value and support the well-being of all its members, regardless of age.
