Ávarp áheitaráðstefnu vegna Afganistan
High-Level Pledging Event for the Humanitarian Crisis in Afghanistan,
31 March, 2022
Statement by H.E. Minister for Foreign Affairs Thórdís Kolbrún Reykfjörd Gylfadóttir
Co-chairs, excellencies, ladies and gentlemen.
Afghanistan is facing a most severe and alarming humanitarian crisis. After decades of conflict and the collapse of the country’s economy, millions of people are experiencing acute food insecurity and hunger.
The ongoing roll-back of fundamental human rights under the Taliban authorities is profoundly disappointing. In particular, the decision to exclude girls from secondary education is deeply concerning and damaging, not only for the girls themselves and their families, but for the future of Afghanistan.
The need for predictable and flexible funding for humanitarian operations in Afghanistan has never been greater.
Iceland will play its part and today I am pleased to announce a multi-year pledge of a total 360 million Icelandic Krona to humanitarian support in Afghanistan, or 120 million per year for 2022-2024.
This contribution will go to three of Iceland’s priority humanitarian partners: UNHCR, WFP and OCHA.
In addition, for 2022, Iceland will make a 40 million Icelandic krona contribution to UNFPA for its critical work for Afghan women and girls.
Ladies and gentlemen,
The number of individuals in need for humanitarian assistance globally has never been higher. It is critical that the international community comes together in support of lifesaving support around the world.
Iceland aims to do so, as is reflected in our planned increase in overall humanitarian assistance this year.
Thank you.
